Syelo Community Newsletter - Month in Review

February 2024

Hello and Happy February ❤️

Last month was a wild ride for Syelo as we formally and publicly launched welcoming our first cohort of official founding members: Adam Sedaka, Austin Luu, Eric Amemiya, Erik Winden, Mark Bradbury, Matt Sowin, Nicole McPherson, and Shauna Lassch!

Alongside our new members we were also very privileged to welcome Steve Mair (ex- SVP of talent @ Yahoo, Walt Disney, Precore Technologies), Will Bronaugh (SVP of Talent @ Bill.com, ex-Amazon, ex-Groupon, ex-Docusign), and Heather Redisch (Founder of The Talent Maven) as advisors and mentors to the Syelo community.

YC recruiting startup Complete.so competed in Syelo Tank. You can watch their product demo here. Great resource if you are in the market for tooling that betters the candidate experience at final stages.

The talent market has continued to be chaotic, but luckily our community members have rallied together to not only keep us sane but also share exclusive recruiting jobs! A big congratulations to those who are starting a new role this month.

Below is a recap of January that shares our learnings and a breakdown of what to expect this month! As always if you have any questions, concerns or ideas please reach out to Sabrina, Mike, or Amir.

Community Highlights:

Between our discussion sessions, office hours, and fireside chats, we've covered several essential topics:

  • Syelo Advisor Marlon Dulay graciously hosted our first office hours around Workforce Planning. You can check out the slide deck here

  • We had a very in depth discussion around Strategic Sourcing. We talked about tools people are currently using, what the present and future of strategic sourcing looks like, and how to incorporate yourself into valuable conversations with leadership around strategic sourcing

    • You can check out our findings here

  • In our second office hours sesh, we talked about Effective and Efficient Interviewing. You can check out the slide deck here

  • We hosted our very first Fireside Chat with Steve Mair. Here were some key takeaways from that amazing conversation:

    • Be vocal, be honest, and have solutions to problems.

    • Be passionate/obsessed with the business. Truly learn the business so that your passion is undoubtable.

    • Build real relationships with your CFO and CRO. Understand their reality.

    • Talent leaders should learn HR skills to achieve the Chief People/Talent/Recruiting Officer title.

  • We are very excited that our former advisor Mike Rubino has joined as full time co-founder and Chief Product Officer of Syelo!

  • We introduced some new channels to the community:

    • #tea-time: a place where we can commiserate, vent, share our frustrations, and get some comfort from our peers

    • #celebration: a place to share our wins. Birthdays, anniversaries, “good days”, share some positivity!

    • #job-search: whether you’re currently on the job market or have a TA job you want to post, this channel is for advice, accountability, and support

    • #project-review-feedback: share your current TA projects with our community to get advice, insights, feedback.

Housekeeping Items:

  • Community Directory

    • Please make sure your information is accurate in the directory. This is helpful for networking as well as making sure we’re not stepping on each other’s toes in sourcing candidates. If your information is not in the directory (or isn’t accurate), please DM Sabrina.

  • Bi-Weekly Discussions:

    • Optional bi-weekly discussions on talent acquisition trends/advice/professional development, are held every other Wednesday - three different session times (7am, 12pm, and 5pm PST). If you have not been added to one of these sessions and would like to join, please DM Sabrina with your preferred time.

  • Advisors Only

    • We will have an Advisor meeting the first Thursday of every month (next one is February 1st). We have two sessions you can join; 10am or 12pm PST. If you have not been added to a session, please DM Sabrina with your preferred time.

  • Syelo Candidate Share Platform

    • If you haven’t checked out our candidate share platform, we highly encourage you to do so. Please make sure if you’re adding candidates, you’re also sharing good notes for anyone who is reviewing them. These candidates can come from your current pipeline (if they’re not a fit for your role), can be network referrals, or even teammates/friends/family who have been through a layoff, etc…

Are you welcoming a new family member? Did you land a new job? Did you achieve a new career milestone? Are you celebrating something special? If so, please let us know so we can participate in your wins! Cookies, donuts, cupcakes, or champagne will be enroute ASAP!
